ABSTRACT

The Jane-Finch neighborhood is located in northwest Toronto, Canada. Nearly a quarter of the population is African, Caribbean, and black (ACB), and the community is much younger and faces higher rates of unemployment than the rest of Toronto. The goal of the Let's Talk About Sex (LTAS) research project was to explore how young, racialized women in Jane-Finch negotiate sexual agency in this context of risk. People wanted to choose methods that would help them understand how young women make sense of their own sexual health choices, as well as celebrate their agency in hostile, structurally inequitable environments. Photovoice is a community-based research (CBR) approach, advocacy tool, and health promotion strategy pioneered by Wang and Burris in research with village women in rural China. It has been used in research and community development interventions with various marginalized populations.
