ABSTRACT

Digital image technologies have swept across all sectors of our society. In a few short years technologies once beyond the technical and financial reach of most people have become ubiquitous. The camera in the iPhone takes a higher resolution image than the author first "high-res" digital camera did at a fraction of the cost. Each case study reflects a different degree of community participation and collaboration, a different approach to the deployment of visual technology, and different ethical considerations. The author's focus on collaboration arises out of his subject location as a person of indigenous descent. Collaborative research is a guiding principle that underwrites much of his approach to research. As an indigenous scholar and filmmaker, the author want his works to speak to a social reality that is observable. He insist on a fidelity to a reality that is clearly out there.
