ABSTRACT

This chapter provides discussion of the Best Practices and explains why they are important and how they fit into the oral history process. Community oral history projects frequently start with the idea that it would be great to talk to some of the old-timers and create an exhibit of some sort to celebrate a landmark anniversary. Community oral history interviewers aims to document previously unknown information about the community in question, filling in gaps and seeking deeper context about what is already known. Community oral history projects contribute much the same kind of documentation about past times and places that future historians and the casually curious may turn to in an effort to understand more fully the life of the community. By keeping the sights on these best practices for community oral history projects and by equipping yourself with the detailed information in this five-volume Community Oral History Toolkit, which made an important contribution to your community's knowledge and understanding of itself.
