ABSTRACT
Forty years ago, industrial archaeology was a newly founded subject with few adherents, and it had little influence on society at large. In the UK, it had grown out of the railway and canal preservation movements and the controversial destruction of the Euston Arch outside Euston station, London, in 1961. Modernism was supposed to supplant and improve on the old Victorian architecture.
