ABSTRACT

The purpose of recording and documenting industrial sites is to create an archive, usually both written and illustrative, for permanent storage, a process usually described as preservation by record, and in many cases to provide an interpretation of the site or structure. The term recording covers a wide range of techniques from the provision of a written description to a fully measured site plan and researched report. The most valuable uses of understanding and properly recording a process in relation to its surrounding structures is to give an insight into relative importance of those structures and draw attention to those worthy of further recording or even preservation. The documentation of a production line can also be useful in the evaluation of a historical industrial monument. Following the production line through a manufacturing plant is a practical way to give consistent structure to the documentation work and the report giving account of collected material describing the process flow through the plant.
