ABSTRACT

Manulani Aluli Meyer evaluates Indigenous Ph. D. s from many islands and continents across the planet. Virtually every culture she has come across has a similar framework that defines the difference between knowledge, knowing, and understanding. She was learning how to become an Indigenous social researcher. She was learning how to become an Indigenous epistemologist. Indigenous scholarship is about naming and bringing forth the spiritual aspects of life. It is an epistemological hologram and has been the inspiring rallying point of all my current understanding. A hologram is a three dimensional photograph made with the aid of a laser. Hirini Moko Mead describes this hologram via Mori culture as: Te Whnuitanga: an in expanding knowledge outward Te Hhonutanga: an in-depth knowledge Te Mramatanga: an enlightening of knowledge. Manulani Aluli Meyer use Indigenous as a synonym for 'enduring patterns' with regard to philosophy.
