ABSTRACT

Conjectures about agriculture in the Ebla period are mainly based on the finding of pollens and of the remains of other kinds of vegetation at the excavation site. The climatological characterization of the area surrounding the archaeological site of Ebla for the modern time was delineated using two main sources of data: Internet and the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The information collected in the agro-environmental surveys about the presence of various crops, together with the climatic considerations, may be compared with the epigraphic data, with the archaeobotanical investigations pertaining to agriculture and vegetation in the territory of Ebla in the Early Bronze Age, and with the results of the analysis of the remains with isotopes techniques. Agriculture is greatly influenced by aridity conditions, allowing growing some kinds of crops only with the help of irrigation systems.
