ABSTRACT

This chapter presents preliminary results of the analysis of charred archaeobotanical material recovered from the Early Bronze IVA levels at Tell Mardikh/Ebla. A wide range of archaeological contexts in Royal Palace G and Building P4 were sampled in order to better characterize the human activities taking place in them. The analyzed botanical samples from Royal Palace G and Building P4 are described according to their related contexts, as for example floors, jars, hearths, and silos. The samples from Royal Palace G were collected from different archaeological contexts, which include burnt layers above the floors of the rooms, fills of pits, hearths, and contents of vessels. Differences in the plant spectrum of the cultivars occur not only between the two units examined in Royal Palace G, but also in comparison with Building P4. The plant assemblage from Building P4 includes different crops such as barley, free-threshing wheat, rye, and pulses.
