ABSTRACT

On Monday, June 17, 1974, our day started with a visit from two Alyawara men, Dave and Jacob. 1 I asked them about the use of heated stones while O’Connell and I were trying to have breakfast and get some of our notes together in preparation for the upcoming day’s work. When the subject of heated stones was actually talked about, given all the other conversations that seemed to be going on, the two men suggested that the roasting of grubs was frequently accomplished by heating stones in a fire and then pulling them back from the coals where it was easier to work. With the stones in an easy access position, the grubs would then be placed on them for cooking. It was also mentioned that in winter sand was frequently heated and spread on one’s bed at night.
