ABSTRACT

Old Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York, served as a regional headquarters for the US army during the war. The British captured the fort on December and they held it for the remainder of the War. For this project, it explored the history and archaeology of the Red Barracks, a site that plays an important role in remembering the War of 1812 at Old Fort Niagara. As an official army installation, Old Fort Niagara was garrisoned primarily by regular army units; although, Stephen Van Rensselaer and the New York Militia were stationed there early in the War. At the time of the war, Old Fort Niagara consisted of six stone structures that the French and the British built, along with a small number of wood frame structures and bombproofs dating to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The Americans constructed Red Barracks building prior to the start of the war and the British renovated it.
