ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the portrayal of archaeologists on TV and in newspapers, with a particular emphasis on their clothing styles (for a broader discussion, see Holtorf forthcoming). The distinctive archaeological wears shown in the media reflect different perceptions of what an archaeologist does. Archaeological fashion evokes particular themes governing the image of archaeologists both in the media and in other realms of society. Intriguingly, much the same dress styles can also be found in the way archaeologists dress in real life, and that too will be discussed in his paper.
