ABSTRACT

Results of anthropological research should be disseminated in a timely fashion. It is important to bear in mind that these results may not be clear cut, and may be subject to multiple interpretations, as well as susceptible to differing and unintended uses. Anthropologists should not withhold research results from research participants, especially when those results are shared with others. As a general rule the results of anthropological research or projects should be disseminated in a timely fashion, and should not be withheld from research participants if they are shared with other communities of interest. Disclosing the precise location of archaeological or paleontological sites is generally viewed as unethical because it places these sites at increased risk from looting, for example. The issue is contentious for multiple reasons, since it refers to an outcome that may have a range of possible causes.
