ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an explanation of the physiological benefits, safety, equipment, and techniques of resistance training. The benefits of resistance training are provided and include positive adaptations to muscles, nerves, and bones. Proper planning using a periodized resistance- training program will help prevent overtraining and maximize results. The chapter explains the general physiological adaptations to resistance training and the proper technique for specific free weight, machine, and trunk exercises performed at both slow and explosive speeds. Training equipment and facilities can provide a safe environment for exercise as long as basic safety guidelines are utilized. The chapter provides safe and effective spotting assistance for specific exercises and the importance of wearing proper clothing and footwear in the weight room. It explores the basic components of resistance-training exercise technique and identifies specific exercises that can have carryover to other activities. Every resistance-training exercise provides its own unique benefits and challenges.
