ABSTRACT

RELIGION HAS BEEN WRITTEN OFF many times as a dominant force in British life. However it shaped British history in the past and, despite reports of its demise, continues to do so at the national, local and personal level. Institutional religion may be in many ways in decline, but many people would still call themselves either religious or ‘spiritual’. And, of course, although Christianity has been the dominant religion, non-Christian faiths are becoming much more prominent.
