ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explores key issues relating to measurement for improvement within Improvement Science and to support the development of an awareness of the broader principles of the management of data within improvement science. It explores a model of joint and multidisciplinary working, proposed by Lisa Fox which seeks to explore the complimentary roles between data analysts, managers and medical leaders, drawing upon Self Determination Theory (SDT) to help explain this joint approach. The part examines improvement science in an applied way in relation to three concepts from systems theory: the Microsystem; Mesosystem and, finally, the Macrosystem. It also examines the use of data for improvement at the individual level, where Prosenjit Giri examines how personalised leadership diagnostic self-assessment tools can create effective data for planning for personal development goals.
