ABSTRACT

Ageing-in-place is the core concept of the WHO Age-Friendly Cities (AFC) programme. Accordingly, various schemes for delivering ageing-in-place are proposed in terms of different urban planning contexts. In previous chapters, we have discussed the relationship between urban planning and age-friendly environment and intended to do a systematic analysis from the spatial scale perspective. In this chapter, international case studies of AFC projects will become very beneficial for a future comparative study on local planning strategies for this global issue. By understanding how local planners and policy makers address and approach local age-friendly spatial issues, this chapter further extends the dialogue between urban planning theories and principles and the age-friendly strategies of four cases. Case selection criteria are based on different urban land use patterns, ageing speed, population density, and so forth. Cities in both East Asian and Western countries including South Korea, Australia, England, and the United States are chosen for further comparative study from planning policy and different scale approach perspectives.
