ABSTRACT

Succession is one of the most difficult processes for any organization to address strategically. It triggers strong group and individual dynamics. It involves the ambitions of a group, a family, employees or other stakeholders. The main issue triggering strong emotions is whether their stake, assets or employment in the business, are safe. At the individual level, succession will trigger competition among candidates for the top role. In a family business it can provoke sensitive and powerful emotions around issues such as favouritism and love.
