ABSTRACT

Why the clause about caring? Well, rationality does not require you to believe something that follows by modus ponens from things you believe if it does not matter to you. On the other hand, it does require you to have such a belief when it does matter. If things go badly for you because you do not believe something that follows by modus ponens from things you believe, that is a failure of rationality on your part. So there has to be a clause of this sort. It is debatable just what it should be, and for my purposes the precise form makes no diff erence. I have chosen to make it a caring clause.
