ABSTRACT

Let us begin with Pettigrew’s argument that Rhoda cannot be redescribed as an EU-maximizer. Redescription involves making the outcomes (the original bearers of utility) more fi ne-grained, and then assigning values to these fi ne-grained outcomes, which we can call utility* values. The upshot will be that even though there is no utility assignment to coarse-grained outcomes according to which the individual maximizes EU, there is a utility* assignment to the fi ne-grained outcomes according to which she maximizes EU*. Thus, Rhoda is an EU-maximizer, merely one with a utility function that ranges over fi ne-grained outcomes.
