ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the implications of education the work and begins with an outline of the development of the education system. The Education Committee in the Northern Ireland Assembly consulted on this and found widespread concern on key aspects of the methodology used in the audit. A contrast can be seen in the Shared Education initiative, the success of which was due in no small part to the role that teachers played in co-creating models for effective collaboration. The first initiative is termed Shared Education and resulted from a critical examination of the role of schools in promoting social cohesion during the years of political violence. The Shared Education approach has been enshrined in legislation and mainstreamed under local authority control, it will be important that teacher empowerment, which was at the heart of the development of the model, continues to play a key role in its future.
