ABSTRACT

This chapter provides whether the Teaching School network, along with grassroots organisations, holds the key to system maturity. The challenge for those looking to a mature education system is how to maintain the passion of these movements and deploy it with the force of the Teaching Schools network – requiring both synergy and scalability. Teachers with the drive and passion for system change have created organisations like the Chartered College of Teaching and the Teacher Development Trust. Educational systems around the world have demonstrated that with a meticulous action plan, patience and a collective will, systems can change. In the 2010 White Paper The Importance of Teaching, Michael Gove promised a national network of Teaching Schools and spoke of education being the "great progressive cause of our times". Around the same time, David Hargreaves put forward four think pieces on a self-improving school system, outlining the importance of creating, leading and achieving system maturity.
