ABSTRACT

Teach for America and its global spinoff Teach for All also figure prominently. Many of these organisations buy into the 'failing public education system' narrative contributing to the casualisation of teaching. Informal professional networks, both on and offline, have proliferated tremendously. Part of the puzzle is connecting individual teachers with unions, grassroots movements and likeminded organisations to focus on both professional and industrial issues. In many countries, teachers are under pressure with increasing workload, lower pay, increasing attrition rates and de-professionalisation. Many teachers are part of a global conversation and strengthened through many bottom-up networks. The international version strengthened the Dutch discourse and the fact that there are now more localised versions does so as well. Teach for America and its global spinoff Teach for All also figure prominently. EI is the global federation of teacher unions and professional associations.
