ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book investigates the ways individuals in a relationship or marriage with a partner of a different nationality encounter the state and interact with it. It describes the various cases that unveil interesting features of international marriages involving Southeast Asian women. The book employs the lens of marital citizenship that proves to be useful to understand the relationship between the state and the individuals involved in international marriages, as well as between the latter and non-governmental agencies that play a role in couple formation. This lens illuminates how the macro- and meso-structural factors intersect and shape the experiences of migration and the family of Southeast Asian migrant spouses and their partners. In the context of globalization and fast-changing migration trends, it may be challenging to keep a clear view about international marriage phenomenon.
