ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how a postfeminist sensibility shapes the discursive deployment of 'queer' in the workplace. It examines how a postfeminist sensibility is connected to the discursive construction of queer in the workplace, illustrated empirically by drawing on the perspectives of gay men. Relying on Gill's (2007) conceptualisation of postfeminism as a sensibility and how this collaborates with neoliberal discourses, the chapter also engages with queer theory to examine how queer is discursively mobilised by gay men and their employers. The chapter shows, another discursive formation, the notion of a 'post-gay' culture, mirrors postfeminist discourse in how it re-secures gender and sexual hierarchies. It outlines the various ways postfeminism has been conceptualised by feminists, elaborating in particular Gill's (2007) notion of a postfeminist sensibility. The chapter presents the empirical data to examine the discursive deployment of queer in the workplace before concluding.
