Distance Supervision book
This chapter explores best practices for technology-facilitated supervision, requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, how to establish and maintain a distance supervisory relationship, the intricacies of conducting distance supervision, and effectively and ethically explaining the process and risks to potential supervisees. We primarily focus on distance supervision by means of videoconferencing, which we argue increases supervision options available to art therapists. Due to the newness and burgeoning of telemental health, there is an equivalent development of distance counseling, training to conduct distance counseling, and distance supervision. In addition, reasons for engaging in distance supervision, issues related specifically to distance supervision, and technology considerations are addressed. This chapter includes a vignette by the second author, a scenario for readers to consider, and arts-based supervision practice prompts.
