ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers how cross-curriculum linkages between science and other subjects can be established and provides students with opportunities to challenge their commonly held beliefs about knowledge. It suggests that there are surprisingly entrenched misconceptions about the nature of science among many people, including teachers and students. The book focuses on limitations of a methodical approach to teaching science and explores how magicians approach wonder and mystery and providing a framework for utilising science magic to increase student engagement and learning. It describes there are few resources available for teachers to use to teach this subject area while attitudes and concerns held by teachers, students and parents remain largely unknown regarding the teaching of evolution. The book examines the idea of miracles and creates a discussion on why they are potentially a controversial subject in the area of science and religion.
