ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the exercises which are designed to aid teachers and workshop facilitators in introducing this important, but complex, insight into discussions of a wide range of issues. They were designed as part of the Learning about Science and Religion research project and to support a series of public and school workshops given by the author entitled "The Power and Limits of Science". The approach has been used successfully since 2016 in a variety of forms and settings with secondary students and adult groups. Scientism is the belief that "all problems–including distinctly human problems–are merely technological problems". An alternative view, which is held by many scientsits and other scholars too is that there are many "dimensions" to most problems. The chapter introduces the conceptual variable of "scientific difficulty". This is an example of something that is not measurable but people can have a surprisingly good "feel" for what it means.
