ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with a simple idea that global citizenship may become reinforced as a concept or framework for action associated with globalization and particularly the network society intimately connected with the growing importance of digital cultures. Global citizenship education (GCE) is a model promoting human rights, freedom and liberty. Building GCE as a social movement requires a diversity of approaches and practices as well as robust agendas for research, teaching, activism and policy. The creation of a GCE social movement should influence the domains of public diplomacy, both at the level of an emerging field of study which is well represented in new programs created in many countries and universities—for instance, the Center for Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California, and government interactions as people's democracy. A global social movement should first and foremost serve youth as a historical category, becoming a vehicle for youth's voices to beheard and initiatives implemented.
