ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a form of Dance movement psychotherapy (DMP), called the Moving Cycle (MC). When DMP is studied outside its pioneer-based methods, two main constructs unify the field. The first is the healing power of conscious movement, and the second is the embodied creative experience. The cycling of conscious movement can be an effective way to address movement coherency within, across and amongst bodies. DMP’s rich roots intertwine with those of various movement observation and analysis systems. Many researchers and clinicians have noted the strong relationship between movement and a sense of agency, defined as an experience that one’s actions produce desired results, as well as feelings of empowered authorship. In the MC, the deliberateness of sensorimotor processing as well as the commitment to the emotional and relational accuracy of movement can restore this feeling of self-authorship.
