ABSTRACT

The use of touch in dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) is a topic of relevance for professional dance movement psychotherapists taking into consideration the premise of holistic body–mind integration. Developmental psychology mostly focuses on touch between children and their caregivers as a form of non-verbal communication. A focus group and an exploratory session were organised to gather research data from the participants. From the research outcomes touch appeared to make sense as a tool in DMP, which, when properly used, can facilitate clients’/patients’ wellbeing essentially the purpose of any therapy. The unknown is the theme that many therapists may fear the most as it holds the danger of exposing aspects of personality that are hidden and/or painful. The theme of boundaries was one of the most discussed whilst exploring touch, because touch is a contact point between two somethings or someones. Influential touch was observed mostly when participants were interacting with props.
