ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on short-term planning: the weekly and daily planning we will do to prepare our teaching across the curriculum. It also refers to our use of information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching and underlines the importance of planning the use of ICT, for both ourself and for our pupils. The creation of short-term plans also has a formative role for us as a trainee and is a key training experience in itself. Planning parts of lessons and teaching them makes a good start to building up responsibility for whole lessons. Effective lessons tend to be those with a clear structure and shared understandings about what is to be learned and why, where all children can do the activities and use the learning time effectively, and the teacher assesses progress and evaluates the lessons. Patterns of activity that are known to both child and adult are soothing, familiar and powerful learning activities.
