ABSTRACT

The National College of Teaching and Leadership–which has responsibility for the supply and training of high-quality teachers, as well as teacher regulation and the development of policy for education–is a government agency rather than a professional body. Additionally, the Standards are used as a means of ensuring teachers are accountable through Ofsted inspections and annual appraisal. Every school is different, and every location brings its own unique set of challenges and opportunities for the pupils and teachers learning and teaching within it. The word ‘accountability’ in education is often interpreted negatively as ever-increasing pressure on schools and teachers. The Chartered College of Teaching came into being in 2016, with its founding CEO taking up her appointment in January 2017. Additionally, research by S. Elton-Chalcraft et al identified that 47 per cent of student teachers participating in her study were unclear about what British values are, suggesting tokenistic responses such as queueing, being polite and caring for animals.
