ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the application of dramatherapy with older people who are depressed, through several examples of practice that showed significant improvement in wellbeing and socialisation. Depression in older people can go unrecognised, especially with people with dementia. There is often a pre-occupation with bodily functions and control and possible deterioration of the brain. The potential for creativity can be ignored. In this chapter, it is demonstrated that dramatherapy is an ideal medium to work with communication, confidence and playfulness with older people. For this to happen, it needs to be in tune with people’s cultural background and be age appropriate.
