ABSTRACT

To date, Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) scholars have focused on programs in the global South. Researchers have only recently started to extend studies of SDP to Indigenous peoples who live in ‘First World’ countries such as Canada and Australia. In this chapter, we provide an overview of SDP initiatives that target Indigenous peoples in Canada and Australia. More specifically, we examine SDP in Indigenous communities in Canada and Australia to emphasize and broaden understandings of where and how SDP takes place. Moreover, we seek to underscore the point that while SDP may have some merits, it is not necessarily relevant or valuable to Indigenous people. Indeed, while SDP has been positioned as an important social, political, and economic benefit for Indigenous people in Canada and Australia, we question the need for, and benefits of, such initiatives.
