ABSTRACT

This chapter examines "One Billion Rising" more closely, to develop in the following a way of reframing of practices of resistance under the auspices of social media. It proposes adopting the notions of performativity, theatricality and choreography from a Theatre- and Dance Studies viewpoint, to analyse the staging and the distribution of protest, both 'on site' and in the corresponding virtual networks. The relationship between theatre and mediality can be approached from two distinct directions. On the one hand, one can reflect on the extent to which the actions that constitute a theatrical event can be characterised as 'medial'. On the other, one can ask how media practices can acquire a theatrical quality. The online presence of ORB in the realm of its internet homepage and on social media like YouTube, as well as the complex arrangement of protest through the medium of choreographed movement on site.
