ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the questions through a case study of two specific broadcasts, which ran concurrently on 2 August 2017, and their online responses on Facebook over the following weeks. The BBC moderates comments on its Facebook postings and it is therefore not possible to know how many more offensive comments were removed. The data vacuum created by a lack of disclosure also muddies the theoretical and political waters when searching for inclusive understandings of gender and its multiple interconnections with other key dimensions of victims’ identities, notably sexuality, ethnicity, and nationality. Zarkov’s work, within a wider literature on gender, sexuality, and nationalism suggests further reasons for men not disclosing. The fusion of cultural nationalism with denialism about the possibility of penetration of men stands out in this Juba-originated comment:That man is a liar.
