ABSTRACT

In contemporary educational research, most issues or interventions tend to be examined in a variety of contexts utilizing diverse methodological approaches. Making sense of such complex domains of literature to inform policy, practice or further research can be challenging for decision makers and practitioners. As evidence-based education gathers pace, research syntheses are increasingly gaining prominence as valid methods for knowledge generation in their own right. This chapter offers a structured overview of key methodological considerations involved in conducting meta-analyses, systematic reviews and methodologically diverse research syntheses. The chapter begins with a discussion of key contributions of meta-analysts and systematic reviewers in advancing the methodology of research synthesis methods. Then, it takes the reader through a methodologically inclusive discussion of guidelines and strategies for enhancing quality in research synthesis methods designed to serve a variety of purposes.
