ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out a range of issues and practices in using visual media in educational research (e.g. photographs and still images, video and moving images, artefacts). It identifies important ethical issues in such research and how researchers can address them, for example: privacy and identification, confidentiality, non-maleficence, anonymity, what constitutes public and private, ownership of the image, and informed consent. The chapter references key documents on ethics in visual media from research associations.
