ABSTRACT

Active imagination was a revolutionary method that Jung discovered while working on his own personal investigating, a process that eventually resulted in The Red Book. Using specific steps that facilitate a dialogue with the unconscious that include lowering our consciousness and allowing the image to speak to us, the images and symbols are imbued with energy. The dialectical process facilitates a psychological transformation. This chapter considers Jung’s process of discovery using active imagination, how it has developed as a working method, and how it can be used in Jungian art therapy. The benefits of using active imagination in Jungian art therapy is that it anchors the images so that an expanded relationship with the unconscious can be revealed.
