ABSTRACT

The main session of any therapeutic group can be anxiety-provoking for both group members and group therapists. Group members are trying to explore the group, and issues of trust, acknowledgment, belonging, and safety are often tantamount in the minds of group members. The activity and handout is meant to be used during the first stage, or the forming stage, of a therapeutic group. Depending on the engagement of group, this exercise can take just a few minutes to a large chunk of the group time. Once the group therapist has introduced the group, the therapist would pass around the bag of selected candies and encourage group members to take some candy. If the group therapist elects to use toilet paper instead of candy, they would proceed with having group members share one bit of information about themselves for each square of toilet paper in hand.
