ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we situate abortion in historical and contemporary struggles concerning women’s rights and responsibilities. We present a recent case in which the right to have an abortion was at the centre of the ethical and legislative debate in order to address questions regarding reproductive freedom and the role of the state and of healthcare professionals. We conclude that new technologies (e.g., abortion drugs) might affect and facilitate access to terminations in countries where the right to abortion is either not recognised or severely constrained.
