ABSTRACT

Is it reasonable to speak of a ‘Nordic identity’ in electroacoustic music? An overview confirms that there is a long and rich tradition of this genre, in its various forms, across the Nordic countries, each of which can boast a number of significant composers and several notable institutions for electroacoustic music. Is it possible to uncover trends that bond these activities into a Nordic community? Can we locate a ‘Nordic sound’ here? Or do we simply find a collection of national communities and perspectives on electroacoustics – or is this, too, simply an imposed narrative? Exploring these questions will provide the artists’ own perspectives on what it means to be a Nordic composer of electroacoustic music.
