ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on theoretical and empirical aspects of governance in relation to risks, hazards and disasters. It explores different approaches and models as applied to governance in risk, hazards and disasters in a theoretical way. The book discusses challenges and opportunities of keywords such as resilience and vulnerability. It examines the governance process enacted by Australian local governments in mainstreaming adaptation into disaster risk reduction strategies. The book investigates climate risk governance in the Marche Region (Italy), by analysing data from a survey among residents, decision-makers and emergency managers. It presents a disaster diplomacy framework to investigate the implications of diplomacy on disaster governance. The book discusses the challenges of preserving land, housing and property rights in disaster recovery, and analyses the implications of disaster governance systems in ensuring such rights.
