ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the need for a formal, potentially mandatory, faculty preparation program for new hires to higher education institutions. It highlights voices from newly hired faculty to assist in the call for a mandatory faculty development policy on pedagogy and classroom management skills for new hires. The chapter illustrates the story 'The Quest for Pedagogy'. It demonstrates the need for faculty development as well as proposes a policy with the intent of introducing it to City University of New York's (CUNY) Board of Trustees and the Union, PSC CUNY Welfare Fund. The hope is to begin the conversation and transition from first-year faculty struggling in their classrooms to being better prepared to educate their students on day one. In no way should this be taken as a cure for all that ails new faculty hires, however at the very least, a step in the right direction towards modifying the current business of higher education.
