ABSTRACT

Parents have an interest in sharing their values, beliefs, and projects with their children. Prospective parents might use reproductive selection for a number of reasons. For many procreators making use of reproductive selection, their end is not just to create a child but to create a child in order to parent that child. Preconception reproductive decisions differ from child-rearing decisions in that they can also determine which child is created. A person can enter the parental relationship with a child either by creating a child or by choosing to parent an already existing child. The parent-child relationship, unlike other relationships, is characterized by only one party—the parent—being able to choose to enter the relationship. Parents should aim to create the conditions necessary for their children to be capable of determining, for themselves, what they care about and what they will do with their life.
