ABSTRACT
This chapter argues that concepts are as much features of material artefacts as they are of processes that go on in the human mind. Information, numbers, procedures and so on move between the cognizing individual and the outside world and its artificial memory systems such as texts, databases and an increasingly diverse range of material and symbolic technologies. Conceptual change typically is located at the intersection between minds and technologies. As the evolutionary psychologist Merlin Donald argues, the human mind/brain is best conceived as a hybrid mind relying on, and shaped by, its embeddedness in cultural artefacts and practices.
