ABSTRACT

Suicide is considered a ‘bad death’, meaning a death deviating from the accepted norms and regulations governing the end of life (Pool, 2004, p. 963). In addition to being violent and unexpected, an act inwhich a person chooses to end his or her lifemay raise awareness of the tension between the liberty of the individual and social control (Marks, 2003, p. 309; Marra & Orru, 1991, p. 286) and undermine the monopoly over killing claimed by modern states (Baudrillard, 1976/1993, p. 175).
