The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) began permanent operation within Australia in 1883, but the Not-for-profit (NFP) quickly established offices and shelters throughout the country, including at multiple sites throughout the state of Queensland. Originally RSPCA Queensland was governed with a generic managerial technique; however, with Mark's appointment as Chief Executive Officer a re-design of innovative leadership techniques has been adopted. This approach to a contemporary style of leadership has been adopted by a multitude of for profit (FP) and NFP organisations internationally, and has become widely known as transformational leadership. All aspects of Mark's transformational leadership traits are influenced by his concept of RSPCA's 'big picture' vision. Innovation has become a norm of successful leadership within contemporary businesses and organisations. The final focal pillar of transformational leadership within RSPCA Queensland, which follows the ideology of being-orientated rather than animal-orientated, is the concept of collaboration—or something Mark Townend refers to as 'the power of one'.
