ABSTRACT

According to the 2000 Census, minorities composed approximately 28% of the population (U.S. Department of Education, n.d.). Minorities represent about the same proportion of student populations within U.S. colleges and universities. Currently Whites make up about 60% of U.S. new college student enrollment. African Americans represent about 14%, Hispanics make up about 13%, and American Indian=Alaskan Natives (AI=AN) account for only about 0.8% of all college students nationwide (O’Brien, 1992). Of the approximately 19 million college students in the United States, AI=AN students are the minority within the minority (Patterson, 2012).
