ABSTRACT

Incorporation of livestock is a common practice among home gardeners around the world. Although cultural norms and social practices can vary the adoption of different species and their use, livestock play crucial roles in sustaining home gardens, and home gardens greatly contribute to livestock production. While reflecting on the agricultural sector in the country, this chapter highlights the livestock production in home gardens as an integral part of Nepal’s agricultural systems. The chapter also discusses the attributes of these two systems and recognizes the importance of these activities to rural communities. Along with the issues and challenges facing these systems, innovative interventions to foster growth and sustainability of these activities are also dealt with.
